Evening of the Arts 2012

Well, the end of the year art show has come and gone. It was last Wednesday and it went quite well. I must say, each year I do this, it seems to get easier (don't get me wrong, matting and hanging close to 500 works of art is no easy task). I could not pull off this event without the help of some tried and true parents who always come out to help. A BIG thank you to you!!!!  The show was exciting, eclectic, and beautiful. I love to see what the students pick for their show piece and I love to see how excited and proud they are when they see it on display. This is my last time doing this big event at my current school.  I only hope that their future art teachers continue this fabulous tradition.

8th Grade, "You are what you eat"

I asked the 8th grade to think of a food that represents themselves. The food could be symbolic of their culture or ancestry, representative of a memory or relationship, or about their personalities and what they are interested in.
They had to think about the scale, the color, and the texture of the food. Below are a few photos of students working as well as the finished display.
The final part of the piece was to write an artist statement describing their connection with this food.

Zeotropes with 3rd grade

So the theme for this year with 3rd Grade is "play". The students created their own toy zoetropes . This project helps the students develop an image that transforms so slightly at each stage so it looks as if the image is moving. This was my student teacher's idea and I think it was such a hit, that I will definitely be using this lesson again.
It was hard to capture the image as the zoetrope spun, but I think you get the idea. Below are some still shots of students enjoying the process.

7th Grade Packing Tape People

This assignment was built on the idea of how to create a work of art that interacts with the surrounding environment. The 7th grade students, working in groups, created casts of themselves using packing tape and plastic wrap.  The figures had to be proportional, well put together, and had to show an action or movement. Today we photographed the figures in their environment in order to document the final installation.

1st Grade Cities

The First Graders are working together to create one large first grade city. We talked about all the important people and places you find in our city.  Last week they made their people out of clay. We used a simple ball and coil method to make the people. This week, they began constructing their buildings to go with their people. Each student received a "piece of property" or a rectangular piece of cardboard. They were told they could build on this property however their buildings could not hang off the edge. The end result were many tall city buildings carefully constructed using boxes and tape. Have a look at stage one of their constructions. Next week, we cover them in paper mache!

Paper Mache Birds

I introduced the concept of an armature to my 2nd grade students. They build their armatures using tape and newspaper, covered their forms in paper paper, painted, and added details. This is a terrifically fun project resulting in many birds with their own unique characters. The bottom picture is what I have the students work on when their birds are drying or complete.
